I Never Hated Myself Into Change

I Never Hated Myself Into Change

If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror criticizing your reflection…

If you’ve ever promised yourself that this would be the Monday you finally got your life together…

If you’ve ever believed that being harder on yourself was the key to becoming healthier…

I want you to know something.

I’ve been there.

For years, I believed that if I was just disappointed enough in myself, I would finally change.

I thought self-criticism was motivation.

I thought guilt would create discipline.

I thought that if I could just dislike my body enough, I would finally learn how to take care of it.

So I started over.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Every Monday was a fresh start.

Every setback felt like proof that I wasn’t disciplined enough.

Every missed workout became another reason to be angry with myself.

I wasn’t trying to become healthier.

I was trying to earn my own approval.

Looking back now, I realize something that I couldn’t see at the time.

You cannot build a peaceful life while constantly fighting yourself.

No amount of shame ever made me healthier.

No amount of guilt ever made me more consistent.

No amount of self-hatred ever taught me how to care for myself.

It only made me exhausted.

The Question That Changed Everything

My healing journey didn’t begin when I found the perfect workout plan.

It didn’t begin when I changed my diet.

It didn’t begin when the number on the scale changed.

It began when I stopped asking myself,

“How can I fix what’s wrong with me?”

and started asking,

“How can I support the body that’s been carrying me through every season of my life?”

That one question changed everything.

Because support feels completely different than punishment.

Support asks,

“What do I need today?”

Punishment asks,

“What’s wrong with me today?”

Support creates curiosity.

Punishment creates shame.

Support builds consistency.

Punishment creates burnout.

My Body Was Never the Enemy

For so many years, I treated my body like a problem that needed to be solved.

I was constantly focused on changing it instead of understanding it.

As I’ve learned more about my health, including my journey with lipedema, I’ve realized something that still brings tears to my eyes.

My body wasn’t working against me.

It was communicating with me.

It wasn’t failing me.

It was asking me to listen.

When I finally stopped fighting my body and started partnering with it, everything began to change.

Not overnight.

Not perfectly.

But steadily.

Love Didn’t Make Me Complacent

One of the biggest misconceptions about self-love is that it means lowering your standards or settling for less.

My experience has been exactly the opposite.

Loving myself didn’t make me stop growing.

It gave me the safety to grow.

Because I no longer exercised to punish myself.

I moved because I wanted to feel strong.

I no longer nourished my body because I hated the way it looked.

I nourished it because I appreciated everything it continued to do for me.

I no longer woke up early because I thought I had to prove I was disciplined.

I woke up early because I knew how much more grounded, peaceful, and present I felt when I honored my own needs before the world asked me to meet everyone else’s.

The habits may have looked similar from the outside.

But the intention behind them had completely changed.

And intention changes everything.

The Difference Between Fear and Love

Fear asks you to change because you’ll never be enough.

Love invites you to grow because you already are.

Fear says,

“You’re falling behind.”

Love says,

“Let’s take the next step together.”

Fear demands perfection.

Love celebrates progress.

Fear keeps score.

Love keeps showing up.

Looking back, I can honestly say I spent years trying to hate myself into becoming someone different.

It never worked.

The woman I am today wasn’t built through criticism.

She was built through compassion.

One loving choice at a time.

If You’re Still Waiting to Feel Worthy

Maybe you’ve been telling yourself that you’ll love yourself after you lose the weight.

After your health improves.

After you finally become consistent.

After you accomplish the next goal.

I understand that way of thinking because I lived there for a long time.

But here’s what I’ve learned.

The version of you you’re working so hard to become isn’t waiting for you on the other side of perfection.

She’s created by the choices you make today.

She’s created every time you choose nourishment over punishment.

Rest over guilt.

Compassion over criticism.

Presence over perfection.

You don’t have to earn the right to care for yourself.

You already have it.

A Final Reflection

I still have goals.

I still want to become stronger.

Healthier.

Wiser.

More present.

Growth didn’t disappear when I learned to love myself.

It finally had healthy soil to grow in.

These days, I don’t wake up asking,

“How can I become someone worthy today?”

I wake up asking,

“How can I love and support the woman I’m already becoming?”

For me, that has made all the difference.

Because I never hated myself into lasting change.

I loved myself there.
